3rd Grade: Week 3 of our Digital Lesson
We're almost finished! One last step to really transform the whole piece!
My final found object sculpture! Below you'll see my composition and learn how adding color helps unify the work. I can't wait for you to see how this transforms your own art!
Finalizing the Composition
I ended up searching my house again to find some smaller more 3D objects to add, even after I started gluing! Don't be afraid to go back to your piece and add more objects to it!
Adding items in rows and positioned vertically and horizontally made things feel more purposeful in my piece. My goal was to make sure it didn't look like I had just dropped all my objects on the cardboard. For it to look like art, everything should look planned and deliberately placed.
This is your last chance to adjust anything. Did you notice that my largest 3D object, the toothpaste tube, was placed along one of the vertical lines for my rule of thirds? I also added the 4 circles on the other vertical line. Which lines or intersecting points did you use? Don't forget, you only glued to cardboard so don't be afraid to pull something back up if you need to change it. Don't worry if the cardboard rips, it'll add more interest!
Let's Paint!
Creating unity in an artwork is when we bring the whole design together so that it feels like one cohesive (united and working together effectively) piece. We are going to create unity in our piece by only using one color to paint the whole artwork. Let's get set up!
Cover your work area with newspaper, junk mail, scrap paper. Get a paint shirt! Make sure its okay if paint gets on whatever you're wearing. Since we're only using one color you won't need to rinse your brush out!
What color are you going to use? What paint do you have around your house? I would avoid watercolors but tempera, acrylic, or any old house paint would work great. If you don't have any paint take equal parts flour and salt, mix them together in a bowl, and slowly add water until you have a nice smooth liquid. Add your choice of food coloring!
If you don't have a brush laying around you can always use a q-tip or sponge, it just may take longer. (I actually cheated and just used spray paint to make mine go faster 😜)
It may take a few layers, the goal is a solid layer of paint. Check out my before and after!
What a difference! Share your final images with me on Seesaw in the new activity!
