3rd Grade Week 5: Talk of the Town

Time to turn our ideas into masterpieces! Let's make your ideas come to life! This week you'll be drawing out part of your city, stretching across the sky in all its glory!!

Now that we have all of these wonderful ideas about who are city is for and what they might need, we have to design it! That is the challenging part. What is everything going to look like? Let's take a look at architecture through the ages in order to inspire us!

The history of architecture follows the cultures, traditions, religions, and trends that have existed through time. From the very first cave to modern skyscrapers every building has laid its mark on the world's architecture. As developments in building design and different materials came available, different architecture became possible and evolved.

Let's watch the video below to see how buildings have changed throughout history.

How to get started

Take a blank piece of copy paper and fold it in half. I am going to recommend you fold it hot dog style (so it is nice and long) because that will give you more room for your buildings. If you want taller buildings than you can absolutely fold it the other way.

Here's the trick to our project. You can only draw on the top half of your paper. We're going to do something really cool with our city next week! Exciting!!! For it to work though, you need to leave the bottom half of your paper blank!

Check out my example below. Try to vary the heights of your structures for a more interesting skyline! You can be closer to your buildings, like the lego image above, if you want to include more detail on your buildings. Be creative and have fun! Feel free to create signs on your buildings, so we know what they are! I didn't add anything to show travel from my brainstorm; I didn't want it to get too busy. Don't feel like you have to use all of your ideas and you will definitely be coming up with more as you work! Have fun!

Don't color them yet!! I have specific instructions on what you need to use and do when you color so just work on getting your town drawn out this week! When you're done share it with me on Seesaw!
