3rd Grade Week 4: A world of your imagination

For our next project we're going to be the architects of our own worlds. We don't have a lot of control in our current world so let's be architects and plan and design our own!

With our current situation we're in our own houses a lot. Inside, outside, all around it. I'm sure that I'm not the only one a little tired of their home. Sometimes I like to imagine where I would go if I could visit anywhere right now. Since we can't do that in real life let's create our own fantastic places that we would love to exist. Let's be architects!

Architecture is the art, science, and business of building. An architect comes up with an idea for a building and plans it combining art and science to create a functional, appealing building. Their goal is to create a beautiful building that serves the needs of the people who will use it.

We're not going to create just one building though. We're going to plan and build a whole town! Who is going to live in your city and what sort of buildings will they need?

Iggy Peck, Architect

To start thinking like an architect let's check out this book, Iggy Peck, Architect.

As you're listening to the book I want you to notice all the different materials that Iggy uses to create his structures.

Check out the cover. I see a building made out of apples. Who or what might want an apple building? What about a building made out of rulers? What would you use to make a building for yourself? Let's get creative!!!

Sometimes Iggy used regular building materials and other times he used whatever he had on hand! What would you do? Is your town for people or something else???

Creating a world of your imagination

To create our towns or cities I want you to think about who or what might live there and what they might do. It could be completely normal and all for you! If it was going to be a town I'd live in then I would make sure there was a house with a lake, a rollercoaster, frozen yogurt shop, a beach, a school 😁, a dog park, a shopping mall, etc!! Think about where someone would go to work, to play, to sleep, to eat (normally don't have to do all of those things in the same place 😉 ) Look at the images below. Who would live here?

Creating a Mindmap

Before we get into our drawings, start with some brainstorming! You can create as many mindmaps as you want! In the middle write who lives in your town. Could be you and your friends, a community of artists or athletes like the olympic village! It doesn't even have to be people or anything real! Create a town for cats or unicorns if you want!

Off of your main bubble write activities they would do on a normal day. Below you'll see mine are work, live, play, and travel. Keep these simple. Then start brainstorming!!!

If you have time feel free to start sketching out some of your ideas if you want. You don't have to though, this week we're focusing on generating some great ideas. Have fun!!!
