3rd Grade: Week 1 of our Digital Lesson

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

One of the things we've yet to explore this year is sculpture (3D artwork) made out of a material besides clay. Since we're stuck in our houses a great project to get started on is a found object sculpture. This is perfect for working on at home!

What do you notice about this artwork shown above? Do you recognize anything in it? Do you feel like this is art? Why or why not? If you can, discuss your reaction with someone. Do they share the same thoughts as you? Have your thoughts changed?

Found Object Art

Transforming the idea of art and sculpture many artists use or combine everyday objects to challenge assumptions about what constitutes “art” and how it should be made.

Check out the video below to see how found object art got started. We will be exploring how found art pieces have evolved throughout time before we create our own!

Beginning your Sculpture

We will be looking at another artist next week, but over the next few days I want you to begin to gather some materials. Our goal will be to take objects that have little interest on their own, something you might throw away or recycle, and breathe new life into them. Our final piece will be smaller than a sheet of paper so don't gather anything too large. Consider items that are broken, maybe found on a walk, a small container that is empty, or an item that just has an interesting shape. Try to gather more items than you think you will need so that you have some choice as we move forward. I would say 10 - 20 small items would work well. Make sure you don't gather anything of value as you will not be able to return the items. Happy hunting!!
