4th Grade Week 5: Starting our Sweets!

Let's make our drawings come to life! This week I am going to show you how to take one of your sweet sketches and turn it into a 3-dimensional artwork! Let's go!

What sweet do you want to make? Let's take a look at your sketches from last week.

Think about the shape of the object. How much detail does it have? Do you have some options for how to make it different and unique with colors or toppings? How big is it?

If your dessert seems too large to turn into a sculpture can you create a piece of it? Instead of creating an entire chocolate cake, maybe just one slice? If an ice cream sundae seems too daunting maybe simplify your idea and just create ice cream.

Getting Started!

In the videos below I'm going to show you two ways to start a 3 dimensional sweet.

The first video, on the left, shows how to use tape and newspaper to begin a simple papier-mâché sculpture. Even though I make a donut in the video you can use the same technique for other sweets! Check out how to get started!

The second video uses cardboard or cardstock to begin a sculpture. I have a template for a cake slice in the files tab under 4th grade if you would like to use it. You can take the ideas of creating shapes out of cardboard and attaching them together for other sweets too!

You can always combine the two techniques in one sculpture! Create a cardboard cone and use newspaper/tape to create ice cream scoops on top. It's completely up to you!

Reach out if you have any questions or any trouble starting your 3-dimensional dessert! When you finish this step, share it with me on Seesaw under the new activity!
