5th Grade: Week 2 of our Digital Lesson
Now that you have your name design figured out in your triangle all you need to do is repeat it to create your symmetrical design! Just follow the steps below.
Both of these designs were created by using the same original triangle you saw me make last week. The only difference is where the original lines of symmetry are located.
Repeating your Design
Our goal for this week is to get our name onto the rest of the square to create our symmetrical piece. If you started with your final paper and drew directly on your piece last week when writing your name all you need to do is fold your paper, keeping your writing on the outside. The back of your paper should always touch itself when you fold.
If your writing is on the inside when you trace, you're actually tracing onto the back of your project!
Fold along an existing line that touches the triangle with your name and put your paper with your name facing down. Now you can trace your name onto the second triangle. Unfold and fold along the other side of your original triangle and trace it again. Continue tracing, unfolding, and refolding until your design is on the entire square.
Your finished design should create a symmetrical piece like the images shown below.
Using the tracer triangle
If you printed the tracer triangle last week this actually gives you a few more options. First make sure you have a square sheet of paper to trace your design onto. If you're not sure how to make your paper into a square check out the beginning of last weeks video. Make sure to take your square and fold it in half vertically and horizontally to get a plus sign on your paper. These will be some of our lines of symmetry.
You have 3 choices for how you start your design. Line your triangle up on your paper so a short edge is on a fold and the first letter of your name is on the inside. You can also flip it over so that the end of your name is in the middle. The last option is to turn your triangle so that the middle point, where the middle of your name is, touches the middle of the paper. Both short sides should touch a fold if your triangle is facing in this direction.
Place your tracer triangle behind your paper, line it up carefully with the folds of the paper and trace it. To repeat the design on the rest of the piece you need to flip your your tracer triangle over before you trace again. If you do it correctly the same letters will touch each along the lines of symmetry. If the beginning of your name is across from the end of your name you've messed up! Erase and fix it before continuing.
These images show how different your piece would look from the above options if you place the middle of the triangle in the middle of the paper. It changes where the diagonal lines of symmetry are by having them not come out from the middle.
Confused? Not sure how to get started?
This is a hard one to understand through written directions. Check out the videos below!
The first one shows you how easy tracing is when you use a window, and the second one shows how to create your own lightbox to work flat on a table. It also shows another option for using reflection to create your name design using different lines of symmetry!
If you worked directly on your square piece of paper last week follow these steps! The video below shows another helpful way to trace besides a window.
Want to create your own lightbox to help you trace? This video shows you how. It also shows you 3 different ways to use your tracer triangle to create your symmetrical design. Pick your favorite!
Finishing it up
If you used a sharpie or anything else on your final paper last week when creating your name design continue to use it on the rest of your piece, going over all pencil lines then erasing. If you haven't traced over any of your lines on your final paper yest you may leave it in pencil. Sharpie or some other dark line is not required for the finished piece.
Don't forget to upload an image of your piece into seesaw once you've finished reflecting it onto the whole square. Next all we have to do to finish is add color! Then it's done!
Keep these is a safe place until we finish them up next week! You don't want to restart!
